What is a good balance between cardio and weight training?

Can you answer alteredstateofmindz’s question about Bodybuilding?:

I’m trying to get back in shape. Now, i have no interest in being a bulging mass of muscle, but i don’t really need to loose weight. My friends say i should only work out every other day, but i have also read that you should cardio train daily. What’s a good balance? Any suggestions?
